In 1971, young American artist Chris Burden stood still while a friend aimed a rifle and shot him in the arm. The performance was caught on video. It was a violent time, with war in Vietnam and riots in US cities. Burden wore a T-shirt and jeans and, after being shot, clutched his arm, looking stunned even though he planned it all. He recovered and went on to have himself nailed to a Volkswagen.
“Chris Burden: Extreme Measures" is on view through January 12, 2013.

Some of the dangers of glorifying obesity may include:
- Young girls might not fear getting fat more than they fear nuclear war, losing their parents, or cancer.
- Fat people might no longer be at an increased risk of having their illnesses (including cancers) misdiagnosed or diagnosed late, by doctors working in a medical community in which disdain for fat bodies is rampant, or given the wrong dosages of medicine — both of which can cost millions in unnecessary tests and prolonged treatment.
- Eating disorders — which admittedly are not exclusively about weight but which are cultivated by a culture that identifies fatness as a failure of control — might no longer be a central feature in the lives of 10 million Americans.
- We might not have a weight loss industry that generated $60 billion in revenue in the United States last year, mostly by making women feel like crap about themselves.
- Fat people might not have to worry about whether seats on airplanes or in restaurants or basically anywhere they go can physically accommodate them.
- Dudes might not yell at me in parking lots.
- Fat people everywhere might develop a powerful self-respect, and demand respect from others, and might be less likely to suffer bullying and shaming in silence.
- Fat people might not be so handy for scapegoating, schadenfreude and cheap laughs, or as a means by which others can feel superior.
- People of all sizes might feel better about themselves, because no one would be wasting energy and focus worrying about what would happen to them, how their life would be ruined, if they became fat.
- The amazing Lesley Kinzel

"Oprah is no longer a person with her own (carefully crafted) public image. She’s no longer a person..."

This is a quote from her essay Naked Screaming Oprah Dress Treats Black Women’s Bodies As Placeholders on Salon. Worth a read in entirety. I am fucking disgusted by yet another loathsome White woman using Black women’s bodies to garner attention and controversy and as way to distract from her own utter mediocrity and irrelevance. The lack of compassion that White women have for Black women is palpable. The hatred is visible. Well…it always has been.
All of these “Mistress Epps.” All of these…
Beyond the obvious history of Black women’s bodies and lives being exploited for White women’s amusement, profit and Schadenfreude is the current issue of the way that White women cannot think up a thing unless it harms Black women. They cannot feel empowered unless we are harmed.
Also, let’s review a few things. Oprah was sexually abused as a child. Oprah has had body issues that has caused her a great deal of pain in her life and pain that contrary to popular belief cannot be erased just because she is wealthy. So her specifically being chosen for this dress is beyond White supremacy, racism, misogynoir and hatred. It is abuse specifically for Oprah.
I am fucking disgusted by this artist, anyone like her and White supremacy itself. Instead of these White women perpetuating misogynoir and then asking "why are you offended," why not ask "why do I have daily stunts and attacks against Black women just to make my utter uselessness as a human being relevant?"
And no “unique” White woman; as I mentioned on the ignorant ass Lily Allen video, I don’t give a fuck if you are “different.” You STILL benefit from White supremacy and the repercussions for being held accountable for it and being considered “all like that” is NOTHING compared to what Black people face when being considered “all like that.”

Mosses are bryophytes, which reproduce by cycling through gametophyte and sporophyte stages, rather than producing flowers and seeds. They are also non-vascular, which means that they don’t have the roots and tubing to move water like vascular plants. Instead, they absorb water through their leaves.
