in-the-horniman:

This is a sweet little 18th century sampler. The embroided inscription reads: ‘Lord be praised this 20th day of June, 1791, was cured of the vapours my dear sister Miranda, cured by the help of God, and the curer of all ills. James Hallett’.

These frisky and conspicuous little Sequoia and Kings Canyon residents are often miscalled gophers or chipmunks.

“Thin-shaming is wrong. It is bad and it is harmful and I long for its eradication and I will dance upon its corpse with my fat feet. But it’s important to note that thin-shaming is a symptom of the fact that all women’s bodies are policed all the time—not evidence of some culture-wide, systemic campaign to stigmatize thinness. Thinness is valued. Thin bodies are privileged over fat bodies. Despite the efforts of body positive activists (whose express goal, by the way, is to promote the acceptance of all bodies, including fat ones, not to further women’s oppression by gratuitously shaming the thin), “I’m proud to be fat” is still a radical statement. “I’m proud to be thin” is the status quo.”

hikergirl:

If you should ever make it to Austin, MN (where my parents were born and raised), you should go to the Spam Museum. It’s total fun! Here are Shawn and Charlie.

(side note: I saw Charlie at Christmas and he was barely talking. I just saw him again last week and weekend and he’s saying much more. Some of my favorites: I okay (when he has a little mishap); I did it; I did it (emphasis on different words when he accomplishes anything))

I’m so jealous that you went to the SPAM museum!  I’ve been trying to plan a side trip there for years.

On the morning of September 4, 1957, fifteen-year-old Dorothy Counts set out on a harrowing path toward Harding High, where-as the first African American to attend the all-white school – she was greeted by a jeering swarm of boys who spat, threw trash, and yelled epithets at her as she entered the building.

Charlotte Observer photographer Don Sturkey captured the ugly incident on film, and in the days that followed, the searing image appeared not just in the local paper but in newspapers around the world.

People everywhere were transfixed by the girl in the photograph who stood tall, her five-foot-ten-inch frame towering nobly above the mob that trailed her. There, in black and white, was evidence of the brutality of racism, a sinister force that had led children to torment another child while adults stood by. While the images display a lot of evils: prejudice, ignorance, racism, sexism, inequality, it also captures true strength, determination, courage and inspiration.

Here she is, age 70, still absolutely elegant and poised.

she deserves to be re-blogged.

a hero for the ages.
