FREE ART!

What could be greater (apart from golf with a gator)?!

SMK (Statens Museum for Kunst), The National Gallery of Denmark, has released digital images of 159 highlights, and 100 educational videos on YouTube under the CC BY license. The 159 images and 100 videos are also featured in the Google Art Project. The artworks are free of copyright, but the digital images of them have so far been under copyright restrictions. From now on, they are freely available to our users for any purpose. As a national gallery, we believe that those parts of our collections that are in the Public Domain belong to everyone. With this limited selection of content, we want to test how people use these freely available digital resources in new creative and innovative ways.

How can you use the 159 art works?

All artworks are outside copyright, and we therefore allow you to:

  • Share the images – copy, distribute, and transmit them
  • Remix the images – adapt and reuse them in new contexts
  • Use the images for any purpose – for instance teaching, research, presentations, publications,  film productions m.m., also for commercial purposes on the single condition that you attribute National Gallery of Denmark as the source of the image.

The art works is used with the Creative Commons license CC BY 3.0.

It’s so great to see a museum willing to try on CC for size. Go forth and play with art, like it was intended!

Click through the pic to access these great works.

Also check out their case study at Creative Commons.

I’ve had the honor of working with a colleague at the Statens Museum for Kunst— It’s a cool gang that really values the digital future of museums!
