Happy birthday to Henry van de Velde, the Belgian painter, architect, and interior designer born on this day in 1863. Strongly influenced by the British and American Arts and Crafts Movement, he was a champion of Art Nouveau in Europe. His work featured dynamic, abstract curves, as in this plate from 1903–4.
