badass-bharat-deafmuslimpunkstar:
Janet Jackson’s 1987 AMA performance of “Control.”
This song is from Janet’s album that shared the same title. This album was basically Janet stepping into her own independence. Being the youngest (I believe) of the Jackson clan, Janet had been in the spotlight since she was a young child, managed by her father Joe Jackson. It was not soon after this album released that Janet decided to leave her father’s management.
This song is a young woman coming into her own, and feeling comfortable asserting her independence. At some point in our lives, most of us go through a similar phase. Janet helped us dance our way through it.
So I started a new blog.
Everyone should check out this new tumblr “Black Feminist Music” which looks at black feminist songs and music videos with a socio-political context of black womanhood. I look forward to seeing new posts in the future.
