Students with pointy noses

I encountered this great doodle of a captivated audience in a 13th-century book of law. The book was used in the medieval classroom by teacher and we are likely looking at a group of students that are listening to his lecture. Law manuscripts from the 13th century are known for their entertaining doodles (this book contains at least two dozen), often featuring faces of people. The noses of the group have an interesting shape. They are rather long and pointy. In fact, they resemble the pointing fingers we frequently encounter in the margins of medieval books. The latter emphasized important passages in the text, which may just be why the noses are shaped the way they are. Alert, important information, just follow the nose!
