awritersruminations:

The post about The Biggest Loser was not supposed to be published on this blog. I thought I’d added it to my drafts when, instead, I accidentally added it to the queue. Now that it is published, I will not delete it because it’s what I believe. What I will do is give you more information in case you want to stand up against the show and stop its degrading and exploitative treatment of fat adults and children.

This show is dangerous. It does not promote health; it promotes hate. There is no justification for this show being on the air.

I will also take this opportunity to say that, at this time of year, when we are bombarded with commercials about losing weight and going on diets, let’s resist those messages. Let’s spend time trying to accept ourselves. Let’s be kinder to one another. Let’s fight back against body policing and fat shaming. Let’s celebrate who we are right now and start believing that we are enough.

This year, I’m not making any resolutions to change my body. I am not counting calories. I am not listening to corporations or television shows tell me that I am worthless, that my body is a problem and part of an “epidemic” and that I should hate myself. Instead, I will keep working towards my bachelors degree in English. I will read Proust. I will write. I will try to survive each day the best that I can. I will be myself and find a way to love the flawed and beautiful person I am. Above all, I will keep speaking out against oppression in all its forms—against fat people, people of color, the poor, the disabled, trans*  and queer people, and other groups who are marginalized in our society.  My feminism is, and always will be, intersectional and inclusive. Our struggles are all different but, together, I believe we can make real and lasting change.

Thank you for reading this. Thank you for your support. I wish all of you the best.
