Dave Brubeck was one of those quiet Christians in public life, who actually behaved like a Christian. He was the Mr. Rogers of jazz, a hopeless square with a grin while playing. Perhaps this was his advantage as he outflanked racists in the south in the 1950’s, and later in 1970’s navigating South Africa.
